1. Use a Unique Title Tag for Each Page Unique Title Tag

Many sites use the exact same page title for several pages in their website. This is a terrible idea.  Having specific keywords you’re targeting with each and every page will help you maximize the exposure your site gets in general. Make sure you optimize your title tags to ensure that you have a unique title for every single page on your site.

2. Embed Keywords in a Phrase

Rather than using just your main keyword in your title tag, it’s much better to embed the keyword within a phrase.

For example, instead of “lose weight,” a much more effective keyword would be “How to Lose Weight for Women Under 35.”

This will help you get traffic from more specific search terms. Also, you reduce the likelihood that Google sees you as keyword spamming.

3. Use Power or Action Words

Using Word PowerUse power words or action words. For example, instead of just “How to Lose Weight,” try “How to Lose Weight Quickly” or “How to Shed Pounds in Weeks.”

These words sound more active and capture more attention. This helps attract reader attention and helps with Google rankings as well. One thing Google tracks to determine where your site should rank is how often users click on your result versus all the other results – By using more active words, you’ll get more clicks and thus more rankings.

4. Place Your Main Keywords in the Beginning

Keywords that appear in the beginning of the title tag are weighed more heavily than keywords near the back. Place your main keywords in the beginning and everything else towards the end of the html title tag.

5. Use a Pipe or Hyphen to Separate Keywords

If you’re using multiple keywords when optimizing your title tag, use a pipe (|) or hyphen (-) to separate them. For example, “Lose Weight | Low calorie Foods.” Don’t let your keywords run into each other.

6. Specify the Acronym

If people are likely to search for your site by the acronym, make sure it’s included when you optimize your title tag. For example, instead of just making your title “Better Business Bureau,” make it “Better Business Bureau (BBB).”

7. Use Numbers to Get Clicks Use Numbers

One proven method of getting more people to click on your content is to use a number, preferably a large one, in your title tag. For example, “101 Healthiest Foods to Eat” or “44 Little-Known Fatty Foods to Avoid.”

8. Home Page Format: Site Name + Tagline

Your home page should be your website name or brand name, plus your tagline, with a hyphen or pipe separating the two. For example, “Weight Loss Made Easy | Lose Weight in 60 Days or Less.”

9. Content Page Format: Keyword Phrase + Site Name

All the other pages on your website should follow the format of having the keyword phrase first, then the site name, separated by a hyphen or pipe. For example, “12 Tips for Building Great Abs | Weight Loss Made Easy.”

10. Avoid: Words That Slow Reading

There are several words that you should try to avoid writing in your title when doing your title tag optimization. These include words like “it” or “because” or “be.” Try to shorten your words to make reading faster.

Instead of “Fats are bad because they add calories,” try “Cut Fats, Cut Calories.”

11. Avoid: Keyword Stuffing

Avoid Keyword StuffingKeyword stuffing is the act of intentionally placing excessive keywords into your title tag in an effort to optimize for multiple phrases. Usually it’s best to just try to rank for one or two terms with each page.

12. Avoid: Long Title Tags

Try to have no more than 69 characters in your title tag. If you have more than 69 characters, Google will replace the rest of your tag with an ellipsis (…) which looks unprofessional and reduces your ability to craft your own message.

13. Avoid: Rewriting Keywords

Don’t rewrite keywords, even if you think that it means the exact same thing when it’s rewritten. You need to optimize for the words exactly as people type them in to get the maximum possible traffic.

People almost never search using special characters. Some screens have trouble displaying them and Google frowns upon them. Avoid them if at all possible.

15. Avoid: Commas and Periods Period

Commas and periods both reduce the speed at which people read your title. They cause people to pause and read your title in a less excited internal voice. Statistically, headlines with periods or commas make fewer sales than those without. Even if it’s less grammatically correct, opt for leaving the periods or commas out.

    The title tag is the clickable link on a search results page, so it needs to be attractive to potential visitors. Include keywords for the search engine spiders, but don’t overdo it. It’s important to convey what the benefit of visiting that page is.
